Cannis nets game-winner as No. 18 Skyhawks beat UCCS 2-1
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Emma Cannis banged home a rebound in the 65th minute to lead No. 18 Fort Lewis (7-0-1 overall, 4-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 2-1, come from behind win at UC-Colorado Springs (4-2-0, 1-2-0) tonight at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Cannis scored after Nicole Schumacher rang a shot off the post to put FLC ahead 2-1. Her marker stood up for the final 25 minutes as Fort Lewis held on to take sole possession of first place in the RMAC. The marker was Cannis’ fourth of the 2011 campaign.
Schumacher tied the score at 1-1 just 14 minutes earlier when she converted a 35-yard free kick – her first tally of the year.
UC-Colorado Springs grabbed a 1-0 lead 2:02 into the second half when Agnes Arnadottir headed Julia Saenz’s corner kick past FLC goalkeeper Amanda Raso.
“They were big and physical,” fifth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke said of the opposition. “All in all, it was our best game start to finish of the year. With a little luck, we’d have scored another goal or two.”
Fort Lewis outshot UCCS 18-14 overall and 8-4 in shots on target. Kelly Schroeder made six saves for the Mountain Lions, while Raso stopped three shots for FLC.
The win moved the Skyhawks into sole possession of first place in the RMAC.
The Skyhawks continue their two-game road trip at 1 p.m. Sunday at Adams State (4-4-0, 1-3-0).
