BEXLEY — A three-goal outburst in a span of 4 minutes pushed Capital University past Wilmington College in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match Tuesday afternoon.
The 4-1 loss ends Wilmington’s season at 6-11-3 while Capital advances to the semifinals with a 10-7-2 record.
The second-half barrage of goals came on the heels of a scoreless first half that featured solid attack and defense from both teams. In the opening 45 minutes, Wilmington took five shots to Capital’s four while the Crusaders owned a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
“In the first half we played some of the best soccer that we’ve played all year, which is what you hope your team does at tournament time,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “We played to feet, had good movement, stepped to the ball and defended well. We played Wilmington soccer.”
Capital broke the scoreless tie with a Hillary Ells goal in the 53rd minute.
Wilmington responded 9 minutes later when Lauren Mumaw (Dayton/Dayton Christian) scored the equalizer off a deflection in front of the Capital goal. The goal was Mumaw’s fourth of the season.
“We did a great job of responding to the first goal, but that’s when you have to get a little tougher on defense,” Spirk said. “You can’t give up any more goals.”
The Crusaders scored 41 seconds after the ensuing kickoff when Ells collected a ball played over the Wilmington defense and deposited a shot into the Quakers’ goal.
Less than three minutes later, Capital went up, 3-1, when Tara Zimmer scored.
Capital ended the scoring binge in the 67th minute when Kaylee Phillips connected to put the Crusaders ahead, 4-1.
For the game, Capital out-shot Wilmington, 12-9, but seven of the Crusaders’ shots were on goal while the Quakers framed just two shots.
Capital took six corner kicks to Wilmington’s two.
The game ended the collegiate careers of Mumaw, Britney Beck (Monroe/Lemon-Monroe), Amy Johnson (Wilmington), Ashley Garcia (Riverside/Stebbins) and Erin Moore (Grove City).
“I told the team after the game that I am very proud of our seniors and what they have accomplished in their four years, particularly this year,” Spirk said. “They are the main reason that we got back to the conference tournament and played like we did. They all had impacts this season, as well as in today’s game. If the rest of our players are willing to work hard and learn like the seniors did, then we will be a good team next year.”
