The Capital University men’s soccer team scored early and held on Friday night, defeating Carnegie Mellon 1-0 in a non-conference match at the Adidas Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio.
Sophomore Zach Inman (Groveport, Ohio) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 25th minute, scoring on a pass from sophomore Tim McCarthy (Dayton, Ohio) with two defenders in front. It was McCarthy’s second assist of the season.
Despite being outshot 24-13 in the contest, Capital (2-1) held on thanks to a pair of saves in the last 10 minutes from sophomore goalkeeper Bob Weisgarber (Columbus, Ohio), who registered his second shutout of the year.
Weisgarber, a captain, stopped eight shots in the contest. The Tartans (1-1-1) allowed just two shots on goal and finished with an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Senior captain Dan McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio) and junior Luke Froehlich (Columbus, Ohio) combined for seven shots. Froehlich posted Capital’s only other shot on goal.
The Crusaders continue play at the Adidas Invitational tomorrow against Wheaton. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
