Cardiac Colonels Win Again With Overtime Goa
Prairie View, Texas – Just two days removed from needing a massive comeback to defeat a team on the road, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team would once again need overtime theatrics to pull out the victory, getting another game-winning goal from Spencer Valdespino to defeat the Prairie View A&M Panthers 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Nicholls (3-0-1) fell behind and took over 30 minutes to get the equalizer to at least force overtime, outshooting the Panthers (0-4) 8-3 in the second period and 2-1 in the final ten minutes of the match. On the day, Nicholls outshot PVAMU 15-10 overall and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Valdespino came through in the clutch again and tied for the game high in shots with four along with PVAMU's Angie Guillory as each had three shots on goal. Behind her, Hannah Savoie, Lauren O'Brien and Kristy Tatom, who earned the game-tying goal, each had two.
In the first start of her career, Taylor Mosley (2-0) allowed one goal and had five saves to earn the win, while the defensive trio of Meghan Lanteigne, Kirsten Cunningham and Amber Moore did not leave the field helping anchor the Nicholls defense.
Seven minutes into the second half, PVAMU's Arianna Roundtree was the recipient of a deflected shot and pass from Guillory and scored the game's first goal to put the Panthers up 1-0.
In the 83rd minute, Annie Newell fired a cross to a sprinting Tatom after a deflection off of the Panther goalkeeper and found the back of the net to tie the game with just seven minutes remaining in regulation.
It would have been hard to top her goal on Friday against ULM to earn the win, but unfazed, Valdespino blasted a shot from 30 yards away past the goalie ending the game and allowing the Colonels to escape with the victory.
The Colonels return to action on Friday for the first of four consecutive home matches in Thibodaux, beginning with a tilt against Mississippi Valley State.
