WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team picked up its second win of the season during the first day of the Cardinal M Club Weekend Classic Saturday afternoon — and the Cardinals did so without scoring a goal.
The Cardinals took advantage of a Concordia-Chicago own goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation en route to a 1-0 nonconference victory at Ochrymowycz Field.
“That was a good advertisement for collegiate soccer,” said SMU coach Pete Watkins. “I thought both teams played very well — we were fortunate to catch a break late in the game, and that was the difference.”
Dontae Gillespie (Naperville, Ill.) was impenetrable in the Cardinal goal, stopping a career-high nine shots in posting his first collegiate shutout, while SMU had more than its fair share of quality scoring opportunities, but could not find a way to get one past Cougar goalkeeper Jorge Guzman.
The Cougars, however, found a way, as the free kick by SMU's Midhat Mujic (Rochester, Minn.) deflected off a Concordia-Chicago defender and found its way into the net for the game's only goal.
“Sometimes you need a little luck to fall your way,” said Watkins of the game's only goal. “I thought we did a lot of nice things offensively — we just couldn't finish.
“It was kind of a strange way to get a win, but a win's a win — and we'll take all the wins we can get.”
In Saturday's other Classic matchup, Augustana knocked off Lawrence 2-1.
The Cardinals (2-1-0 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, hosting Lawrence in the second day of the two-day Cardinal M Club Classic. Game time is set for 4 p.m. Augustana and Concordia-Chicago will kick off the day with a noon contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
