Casey and Murphy Earn Patriot League Awards
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following Saturday's 1-0 season-opening win over American, Lehigh women's soccer junior Bridget Casey and sophomore Mattie Murphy have been named Patriot League Defensive and Midfielder of the Week, respectively, as announced on Tuesday. The duo connected on the game's only goal, while also serving as key contributors to a strong defensive effort.
Casey was part of a back line that allowed just five shots all game, only two of which were on goal. She scored the game's only goal, her first-career goal, in the 53rd minute from distance. Casey and the Mountain Hawks did not allow a single shot over the final 31:09. Saturday marked only Casey's second game since playing in the 2018 Patriot League Championship game (nearly two and a half years ago). Casey missed all but one game last season due to injury.
Meanwhile, Murphy assisted on Casey's goal and was part of the Mountain Hawks' defense that picked up their first season-opening and Patriot League opening shutout since the fall, 2017 season.
Lehigh will return to action this weekend at Army West Point, now scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 13 at 7 p.m.
