‘CATS BATTLE TO 1-1 TIE WITH MERRIMACK IN MEN’S SOCCER
NORTH ANDOVER, MA -- Wilmington University battled to a 1-1 tie with the host Warriors of Merrimack College in non-conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon .
The Wildcats were the first squad to get on the board, as sophomore midfielder Eddie Kowalo headed home a corner kick from junior Kresimir Nurnberger during the 28th minute. The 1-0 lead was short lived however, as Merrimack tied the game nine minutes later. Matt McFadden kicked in a rebound at the 36:29 mark, to tie the game at one.
That would be all the offense either team would muster, as the teams battle to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action. The Warriors had a flurry of action in the overtime periods, as the hosts got off two shots during the first extra session that were turned away by Wildcat goalkeeper Spyros Stergiotis. Merrimack had two chances in the second overtime period, but both sailed high, and allowed the ‘Cats to hold onto the tie.
Stergiotis recorded five saves for Wilmington in goal, while Mattias Drummond notched three saves for Merrimack. The Wildcats were out-shot by a 16-9 margin, and the Warriors held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Following the game, Wilmington now stands at 0-2-2 on the season, while Merrimack is 1-1-2 overall. The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday afternoon, when they open the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) portion of their schedule with a home game against Philadelphia University. Game time is slated for 3:30 PM.
