NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University picked up their first win of the season, as they blanked the visiting Philadelphia University Rams, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Sophomore Matko Novak put the ‘Cats on the board during the 35th minute, as he knocked home a rebound off a save from the Philadelphia keeper. That gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, and would prove to be the eventual game winner, as Wilmington kept the Rams at bay the entire afternoon. Sophomore Tom Quaranta added a little insurance during the 55th minute for the hosts, when he took a through pass from junior Kresimir Nurnberger and ripped a shot to the far post from 24 yards out. Quaranta’s goal gave Wilmington a 2-0 lead that would hold until the final whistle.
Freshman goalkeeper Spryos Stergiotis notched six saves in his first career shutout, while the Rams’ Alex Haston turned away three shots in defeat. The Wildcats held a 14-12 edge in shots, and also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 1-0 in the CACC and 1-2-2 overall, while Philadelphia dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 2-2 overall. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Warriors of Nyack College in a CACC contest beginning at 3:30 PM.
