‘CATS RALLY TO STUN #20 MILLERSVILLE, 4-2 IN MEN’S SOCCER
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Junior midfielder Ray Kuemmer netted one goal and added an assist to lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University to a 4-2 comeback win over the 20th ranked Marauders of Millersville University in non-conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
The Maruaders entered the game, ranked 20th in the latest NSCAA Division II National Poll, and quickly took action to start the game. Just three minute in, Ethan Daubert knocked home a missed clear on a corner kick from Eric Pepper. Millersville struck again during the 11th minute, as Aaron Roland connected on a header pass from Matt Kadoch. From that point on, it was all Wildcats, as the hosts turned on the pressure.
Wilmington finally broke thru during the 30th minute, as junior Kresimir Nurnberger knocked home a rebound off his own penalty kick opportunity. The Wildcats tied the game right before the end of the first half when Kuemmer ripped a free kick from just outside the 18, that curled into the back of the net.
The ‘Cats took the lead early in the second half, when Kuemmer played a beautiful through pass to sophomore Eddie Kowalo, who beat the Millersville keeper with the eventual game winner. Wilmington made it 4-2, and added an insurance goal during the 64th minute when sophomore Manny Payton received a through ball from classmate Jose Hernandez, and played it over the Marauder goalkeeper, who came out to challenge. The Wildcats held on for the remainder of the period, and came away with the huge upset victory.
Wilmington’s Spyros Stergiotis recorded three saves in goal, while Millersville’s Brad Benzing turned away four shots. Benzing had entered the contest with an impressive 0.22 goals against average, but the Wildcat attack did what it could to spoil that average, netting a season-high four goals.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 3-3-2 overall, while Millersville suffered their first loss of the season and dropped to 5-1. The Wildcats are back in action on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC contest beginning at 4:00 PM.
