CC Battles to Scoreless Draw at UTSA
Colorado College did not get the result it was looking for on Sunday, but the Tigers still extended their lead in Conference USA's West Division.
CC battled to a 0-0 tie against the University of Texas at San Antonio and will take a six-point lead over second-place University of North Texas into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Colorado College, which improved to 11-3-1 overall, has 19 points with a 6-0-1 record in league play. North Texas, which was idle on Sunday, has 13 points with a 4-2-1 conference mark.
It was the first scoreless tie for CC since the second game of the 2012 campaign against the University of Colorado at Stewart Field. It also was the 17th in program history and the third in a Conference USA game.
The draw snapped the Tigers' nine-game winning streak, but their 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) is the fourth longest in program history.
Sophomore Kate Scheele made four saves en route to her ninth shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. She and senior Cody Kornack also shared a clean sheet in the 2-0 victory over FIU on Oct. 4, giving Colorado College a total of 10 for the season.
This season marks the seventh time since 1984 that CC has recorded double-digit shutouts in a season. The record of 16 was set in 1986, while the 1985, 1987 and 1991 squads all recorded 12. It also marks the third time that one of head coach Geoff Bennett's teams have reached double figures, joining the 2009 and 2012 teams that also posted 10.
The Tigers finished with a 21-15 advantage in total shots, including a 6-3 edge during the 20 minutes of overtime. CC also took 10 corner kicks, compared to six for the Roadrunners.
Bubba Makela stopped seven shots for UTSA, which improved to 4-10-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference USA.
Colorado College plays a pair of games next week, one at home and one on the road. Louisiana Tech University visits Stewart Field on Friday, Oct. 26, for the first-ever meeting between the schools. Two days later, CC travels to El Paso, Texas, for its annual showdown with UTEP.
