CC Settles for 2-2 Tie At Northern Colorado
Sophomore forward Jessie Ayers and senior forward Brittney Lyman staked Colorado College to a 2-0 lead, but the University of Northern Colorado struck for a pair of goals in the second half to forge a 2-2 tie on Friday night at Jackson Stadium.
Lyman became the 13th player in CC history to reach the 20-goal plateau when her header off a cross from junior defender Sarah Haizlip found the net in the 52nd minute. She also moved into a tie for 19th place on the program’s all-time points list with 44.
“We are disappointed that we couldn’t close out a 2-0 lead,” head coach Geoff Bennett said, “But credit UNC. They never stopped working.”
Junior forward Brittany Dunn cut the Tigers’ lead in half in the 65th minute and sophomore midfielder Madison Yoswa tied the game a little more than four minutes later.
Freshman Kate Scheele recorded five saves for Colorado College, including a pair in overtime. Senior Natalie D’Adamio also stopped five shots and caught a break in the first extra session when Ayers rang a shot off the post.
CC finished with a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 15-12 edge in total shots.
Northern Colorado (0-2-1) became only the third team in Colorado College’s last 17 games to score more than one goal in a game, dating back to the 1-1 tie against Fresno State on Sept. 16, 2011.
The Tigers had won all 14 previous encounters with Northern Colorado and had outscored the Bears 42-2.
“We had our chances in overtime, but we hit a post and a crossbar,” Bennett said. “We need to regroup and get ready for Utah and BYU.”
Colorado College (1-0-2) returns to action on Thursday, Aug. 24, when the Tigers play host to the University of Utah at Stewart Field at 4 p.m.
