The Central Connecticut women's soccer team dropped its season opener against the University of Maine (3-0-0) on Tuesday by a score of 2-1 in Orono, ME. Junior Kerriann Welch scored the lone goal for CCSU, the first of the season, and was assisted by senior co-captain Jewel Robinson in the loss.
The Blue Devils (0-1-0) out-shot the Black Bears 15-9, 10 of which landed on goal. Nine members of the CCSU squad contributed to the offensive stats while senior co-captain Nikola Deiter notched four saves in her 90 minutes between the posts.
The Central offense was led by Welch, who posted two shots, both on goal, and scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils. Senior Allison Kelley and freshman Christiana Solomou also registered two shots on goal. Freshman Kristine Kelly landed one of two shots on goal, while junior Julie Lavoie and freshmen Kelly Halligan and Laura Gomez each posted one on goal. Robinson and junior Tori Sousa each registered two shots.
The Black Bears began the scoring with a high shot from outside the box in the 14th minute of play by Eve L'Abbe. Just over 20 minutes into halftime, Maine added an insurance goal by Maggie Malone to loft the score to 2-0.
With just less than four minutes on the clock, Robinson secured a pass to Welch who sent a shot low into the corner of the net to narrow the deficit to one before the game clock expired.
The Blue Devils will return to action this week on Sunday, Sept. 1 when they travel to Storrs, CT to compete against the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
