CCSU Women's Soccer Falls at Hartford
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team fell to in-state foe Hartford on Sunday by a score of 2-0. With the loss, the Blue Devils' record drops to 2-6 overall, while the Hawks improve to 4-2-3. Senior Allison Kelley and junior Tori Sousa led the Blue Devils on the offensive attack, each posting four shots on the day.
Following two consecutive wins, the Blue Devils fell behind just 17 minutes into the match when Hartford's Chanel Johnson sent a well-placed header past CCSU senior goalkeeper Nikola Deiter to put the Hawks up by one. Both teams posted five shots in the first period with Hartford earning three corner kicks to Central's zero. The teams entered the locker rooms at the half with CCSU down one.
Entering the second half, Central came out strong, posting three consecutive shot attempts. The first, from freshman and NEC Rookie of the Week Morgan Santoro, was saved by Hartford goalie Jessica Jurg, and was followed by two from Sousa, one blocked and one wide.
In the 62nd minute of play, the Hawks earned a corner kick that put them in position to score again on a header by Morgan Berry. The two-goal deficit was too much for the Blue Devils to overcome.
Hartford edged CCSU in shots 13-12. The Hawks landed three of their shots on goal compared to just one for Central. Hartford also led the match in corner kicks 5-1. Both Deiter and Hartford goalie Jurg registered one save on the day.
The Blue Devils will return home to the CCSU Soccer Field next Sunday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. against Harvard. Fans can watch the action live on NECFrontRow.com.
