CCSU Women's Soccer Tops Mt. St. Mary's 1-0
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team earned its first conference win against Mount St. Mary's with a final score of 1-0 on Friday in New Britain, CT. Sophomore Julie Lavoie, assisted by classmate Danica Foglio, scored her first goal of the season in the first half to give the Blue Devils the win. The victory improves Central's record to 2-11-1 (1-5-0 NEC).
The Mountaineers (7-6-1, 2-2-1 NEC) outshot the Blue Devils 16-8 however, Central began the game with an aggressive offense that included two shots and two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play. Freshman Claire Walsh was awarded her second corner kick of the game in the 15th minute. She launched the ball in front of the goal where Foglio set up Lavoie for the bottom right corner of the net. The goal put Central on top 1-0.
In the fourth minute of the second period, a foul on CCSU awarded the Mountaineers a penalty kick. With the opportunity to tie the game on the line, Mount St. Mary's senior Kelly Baker (four goals on the season) sent a shot toward goal that was thwarted by Central goalkeeper Nikola Deiter. Deiter recorded eight saves on the day for her second shutout of the 2012 season.
With just over 20 minutes left in regulation play, the Mountaineers posted a header shot off the cross bar to draw out Deiter followed by another shot saved by the Blue Devils. Central's defense held strong to pull out the win.
CCSU returns to action Friday, Oct. 19 at Wagner (4-10-0, 1-4-0 NEC) at 3 p.m.
