CCSU Women's Soccer Tops Siena 2-1 on Sunday
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team earned its first win of the season on Sunday over the Siena Saints (3-4-0) by a score of 2-1. The Blue Devils improve to 1-5-0 with the win. Freshman Morgan Santoro scored her first collegiate goal in the match, followed by her first career assist to junior Julie Lavoie.
The two teams kicked off the contest evenly matched, until a penalty kick by Siena's Brittany Pfaff found its way to the back of the net to put the Blue Devils down 1-0.
CCSU responded, however, just five minutes later when senior Allison Kelley made a clean pass to Santoro who shot the ball into the top right corner of the net to even the score.
With the momentum in their favor, the Blue Devils launched another attack on goal. A substitution by head coach Mick D'Arcy put Lavoie in position and, just 13 seconds after entering the game, Lavoie found the top left of the net on a pass from Santoro, adding the insurance goal. The game-winner was Lavoie's fourth career goal.
The two teams battled in the second half but both were rendered scoreless at the conclusion of the period, leading the Blue Devils to their first win of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Nikola Deiter tallied 10 saves in the match. The Saints posted a total of 17 shots, 11 on goal, compared to 19 shots, two on goal, for CCSU. Both teams posted three corner kicks in the match.
The Blue Devils are set for their third consecutive home match this Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. against Fairfield.
