Centre men blanked by Allegheny 2-0 in season-opener
In the season-opener for both teams, the Centre College men's soccer teamfell 2-0 to Allegheny College Friday, Sept. 2 in Oberlin, Ohio. The match was played as part of the Oberlin Classic.
After winning eight straight opening games from 2001-2008, the Colonels have now dropped three straight season-openers and fall to 0-1.
Allegheny (1-0) scored at the 44:11 mark in the first half when Michael Iacono notched his first goal of the season from 25 yards out to give the Gators 1-0 lead.
With less than four minutes to play in the match Andrew Zimmer sealed the win with an unassisted goal.
The Colonels out-shot Allegheny 10-6, while both teams had three corner kicks apiece. Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) suffered the loss in goal for Centre. Jackson made one save on the night.
"This is why people say soccer is cruel," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"An uncharacteristic mistake by one of the most dependable keepers I have coached and a miss hit glances in off our back post. This is compounded by the fact that we dominated the second half, were the fitter team, and we put together some excellent passing sequences."
The Colonels will look for their first win Saturday, Sept. 3 in day two of the Classic. Centre will square off against host Oberlin at 7:30 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio.
"We feel our leadership is excellent this year and will lean on that as we look to bounce back tomorrow versus Oberlin," Burch finished.
