Centre pulls away late for 3-1 win at Dallas
The Colonels broke a late tie with two quick goals to pull away from University of Dallas and post a 3-1 victory in men's soccer action Sunday in Irving, Tex.
The game was knotted at one with 15 minutes to play when junior Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) scored to give Centre the lead, followed by freshman Alex Seither (Louisville, Ky.) putting the game out of reach with his first collegiate goal just 1:32 later. Senior Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) assisted on both goals.
Hall also scored a goal of his own, getting Centre on the board in the ninth minute with assists by Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Cameron Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.).
Centre took the 1-0 lead to halftime before Dallas tied the game 12 minutes into the second half on a James Bernard goal with an assist from Matthew Wise. According to head coach Jeb Burch, the goal may have temporarily shaken the Colonels, but the team was strong enough to regroup and pull out the win.
"There was a 15 minute period in the second half where our guys played a little worried," said Burch. "But I am happy with our leadership as the guys regained control and went on to win the game."
With two wins on the weekend trip, Centre currently sits at 8-3-1 overall with a 3-1 record in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Colonels are back on the road at Sewanee on Friday.
"Our experience from earlier in the season really showed this weekend," Burch added. "We will need all of that as we prepare for Sewanee this Friday."
In Sunday's game, Centre outshot Dallas 19-12 while Dallas held a 5-4 edge in corners. Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made three saves for Centre while James Kerin made four stops for Dallas.
