Centre women defeat Maryville 1-0 in overtime
The two teams played 90 minutes with neither scoring a goal, but Centre's Anne Mitchell produced the game winner just 14 seconds into overtime to give Centre a 1-0 victory over Maryville College in women's soccer action Monday in Danville, Ky.
Just after the Colonels gained possession in overtime, Mitchell, a first year forward from Fayetteville, Ark., fired a shot from deep down the right side that continued to drift until it sailed over the reach of Maryville goalkeeper Michelle Foulke. The overtime period was over as quickly as it began, boosting Centre's record to 9-3-1 on the year while dropping Maryville to 10-3-2.
Senior goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) made six saves in picking up her eighth shutout vicotry of the season while Foulke stopped nine shots for Maryville.
Centre outshot Maryville 14-8 in the game, putting 10 of those on frame to Maryville's six. Centre held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
After the non-conference matchup, Centre returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend. The Colonels will take a 2-2-1 league record into a home game with Rhodes on Friday at 6 p.m.
