Chadwell goal rallies LU to Draw
DELAND, Fla. – The Lipscomb women’s soccer team played to their third draw of the season and first in Atlantic Sun Conference play in a 1-1 game against Stetson University on Sunday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.
Freshman Caroline Chadwell erased a 1-0 deficit to rally the Bisons (2-7-3, 0-3-1 ASUN) for the tie.
“The team competed well today,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We showed great character to comeback from a goal down against a strong Stetson team.”
In the 44th minute, the Hatters Katie O’Kennedy stole the ball and ripped a shot from 20 yards out and hit the back of the net on the far post to give Stetson (3-8-1, 1-2-1 ASUN) the 1-0 lead heading into the intermission break.
In the 56th minute, the tandem of Chadwell and Baylee Linnell connected for the third time this season as Linnell had a throw-in to the feet of Chadwell. With an open field in front of her, Chadwell put the equalizer into the back of the net for her second goal on the season. The assist was Linnell’s second on the season, with her previous assist also coming off a throw-in to Chadwell.
A game after only attempting one shot at Florida Gulf Coast, the Lady Bisons had plenty of opportunities with 16 shots. Chadwell led Lipscomb with seven shots, landing four on goal. Linnell attempted three shots, with one on goal and Kendall Galvan came off the bench for two shots and the final LU shot on net.
“We had ample chances to score a second and even a third goal, but either lacked the technique or their goalkeeper came up with a great save,” O’Brien said.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Zerio made seven saves for the Purple and Gold while her counterpart Victoria Troccoli had five stops for the Hatters. Zerio now sits 11 saves shy of 10th place on the A-Sun all-time saves list.
“All in all, I feel we made progress this weekend,” O’Brien said. “We are excited to be headed back home to Nashville for a two-game homestand.”
Lipscomb returns home to face Mercer and Kennesaw State on Friday and Sunday respectively. Friday’s game begins at 7 p.m. while Sunday’s contest kicks-off at 1 p.m. at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. Both games can be seen for free on ASun.TV.
