Chavarin Tallies Two As Yale Drop Loyola, Md
Yale’s strong offensive start to the season continued Friday. Aerial Chavarin scored twice as the Bulldogs earned a 3-1 road victory at Loyola, Md.
Yale (2-1) has won two straight games, outscoring its opponents 8-2.
Noelle Higginson added a goal, while first years Chloe Laureano and Ellery Winkler each notched two assists.
“It’s always great to go on the road and get a win,” said Brendan Faherty, The Loring Family Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “Loyola is a well-coached team that challenged us for the full 90 minutes.”
Chavarin’s first goal of the game, just five minutes in, gave Yale the early lead. It came off a rebound of a Winkler shot that deflected off the post.
The advantage was short lived. Loyola’s Hannah Hoefs scored on a penalty kick less than three minutes later.
The Bulldogs, though, seized control later in the first half by scoring twice in a 2 minute, 30 second stretch. Higginson started it when she finished a beautiful feed from Winkler at 29:57. Then, Chavarin headed home a Laureano free kick at 32:27
As it did in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Fairfield, Yale played very well with the lead, holding the Greyhounds to just four second-half shots.
“We’re very happy with the resiliency our group showed tonight,” Faherty said. “It was a difficult game, but we were able to score three very good goals and limit Loyola’s opportunities.”
Goalkeeper Alyssa Fagel made two saves to post the victory.
The Bulldogs outshot the Greyhounds 15-9 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
The road trip continues on Sunday at Virginia Tech. Kickoff is slated for noon.
“We will enjoy this win for the next 12 hours and then we will turn our attention to a very good Virginia Tech side,” Faherty said.
