Clan earn overtime win against the Marauders
October 1, 2012
Bismark, ND – In a fast, physical game the Simon Fraser University men's soccer team was pushed to their limit as the Clan needed extra time to defeat the University of Mary Marauders, 3-2.
The win was the SFU men's second of the weekend on their trip to North and South Dakota.
"We almost threw three points away tonight," said head coach Alan Koch. "Thankfully frehsmen Colin Jacques stepped up to the plate and scored an excellent game-winner in overtime. We are struggling to finish off games and will need to improve in a hurry to be successful in this year's super competitive GNAC conference."
Freshman Colin Jacques (Richmond, BC) netted the overtime winner in the 96th minute to secure the Clan's victory. It was his second goal of the season.
The first Clan goal came in the 22nd minute when Johan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) fed Carlo Basso (Coquitlam, BC) who put it in for his ninth on the season.
The rest of that period would remain scoreless despite the two side's combined 17 shots.
The Clan would add to their lead early in the second half when Alex Rowley (Maple Ridge, BC) scored in the 50th minute after an SFU corner kick.
During most of the remainder of the half both teams would have many scoring opportunities but could not score.
The Marauders finally answered back in the 80th minute when striker Cam Hager put one past SFU goalkeeper Hide Ozawa (Victoria, BC) for his first of the season.
Ozawa faced 14 shots and saved five on the night.
It seemed as if the game would end 2-1, but at 89:59 Marauder Alex Boyes' header hit the SFU crossbar and the ball crossed the goalline, to tie the game at two.
In extra time both sides had two shots, but SFU's Jacques was the only one to finish, when in the 96th minute he put in a Justin Wallace (Kamloops, BC) pass to earn the game-winner.
The Clan men are back in action at home on September 29 at 7:30 p.m. on Terry Fox Field against Seattle Pacific University. Admission is free.
