Clayton State women drop 2-1 overtime heartbreaker against Columbus State
MORROW, Ga. – October 19, 2011 – The Clayton State Laker women’s soccer team aimed for that signature victory in the first season of the Gareth O’Sullivan era on Wednesday night against visiting Columbus State.
However, a goal by Kansas Bayly three minutes into overtime lifted the Cougars to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Clayton State at Laker Field. The defeat snaps a five-game unbeaten streak for Clayton State, which falls 7-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. Columbus State improves to 11-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Peach Belt.
Clayton State got the early advantage in the 20th minute. Off a direct kick, Josefine Holsten scored on the right corner of the goal off an assist by Natalia Valentine to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
However, Columbus State gained the equalizer in the 57th minute as Bayly scored on a header off a corner kick by Kayla Brown. That snapped a streak of 569 straight minutes without a goal by Clayton State goalkeeper Laoise O’Driscoll.
O’Driscoll recorded five saves in defeat for Clayton State, while her Columbus State counterpart Mary Mancin had two saves. The Cougars out-shot Clayton State 18-5.
Clayton State travels to St. Augustine this Saturday for a 5 p.m. encounter at Flagler.
