Coastal Blanks No. 21 Ohio State, 2-0
CONWAY – Ashton Bennett scored two goals as Coastal Carolina knocked off 21st-ranked Ohio State, 2-0 in the final game of the Coastal Carolina Tournament Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Field.
Coastal possessed the ball for the majority of the first half, holding a 7-3 shot advantage at the half. In the 33rd minute, Bennett stole the ball from an Ohio State defender inside the left side of the box, took two touches and put a well placed ball in right side of the net, just out of reach of Ohio State keeper Matt Lampson.
The Chants added the second goal in the 64th minute when Justin Portillo passed to the right side of the box where Bennett gathered and took a shot that deflected off the left post bouncing into the goal to give Coastal the two goal advantage.
Ohio State only had seven shots compared to Coastal’s 14 while the two teams combined for 21 fouls and were booked for two yellow cards a piece.
The all-tournament team featured defenders Cyprian Hedrick, Kjartan Sigurdsson and offensive MVP Ashton Bennett. Bennett’s two goals pushed up to six goals on the year while Portillo’s assist was his second, trailing Bennett with eight points on the year.
Appalachian State was the tournament champions by defeating Hartwick 3-0 earlier today.
Coastal opens up their Big South schedule at home on Friday when they host Gardner-Webb at 6:00 pm at CCU Soccer field.
