Colonels avenge loss to BSC, move on to SCAC semifinals
Five days after suffering a 3-0 loss at Birmingham Southern, the Centre men's soccer team traveled back to Birmingham and handed the Panthers a 2-1 loss in the quarterfinals of the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday.
The Colonels fell behind in the first half when Brooks Busby scored for Birmingham Southern in the 32nd minute, but a pair of second half goals five minutes apart in the second half proved to be the difference for Centre.
With 32 minutes remaining in the game, Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) took a pass from Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) and drove down the left side, scoring his fifth goal of the year on a shot from just outside the box. A little more than five minutes later, Robbe Tarver (Houston, Tex.) scored on a free kick from just outside the box for the decisive goal.
"We have been through a lot this year as a team," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "I think that paid off tonight as we kept composed and focused and got the result."
The Colonels dominated the stat sheet, outshooting Birmingham Southern 14-3, including a 10-1 margin in their scoreless first half. Centre held a 10-1 edge in corners.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made one save in the victory while Birmingham Southern's Sveinbo Grimsson made four stops.
With the victory, Centre (12-5-2) moves on to meet top-seeded Trinity (14-0-2) in the semifinals Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Trinity won the first meeting between the two teams 3-0 in Danville on Sept. 30.
