Colonels come up short at No. 25 Oglethorpe, 3-1
The Centre men's soccer team came up short in a matchup of two of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's top teams, falling 3-1 to No. 25 Oglethorpe on Friday in Atlanta, Ga.
Centre took the lead late in the first half when Cameron Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.) scored on a cross from Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.). The Colonels took that lead to the half but were unable to hold on, surrendering three unanswered second half goals, two of which came on corner kicks.
"When you give up two set piece goals in a big game like this, it is hard to win," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "This loss stings because we feel like we let it get away."
Oglethorpe tied the game just four minutes into the second half when Nikos Papanikolopoul scored on a corner kick by Sean King, then took the lead in the 68th minute on an Alecksander Tanjga goal off a Jakub Madej cross. King later found Nick Williamson on another corner with 10:06 remaining to extend the lead to 3-1.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made six saves in goal while Oglethorpe's Frank Petersen had four stops. Oglethorpe took 22 shots to Centre's eight and held a 12-6 advantage in corners.
Centre falls to 11-4-2 overall on the year and 5-2-1 in the SCAC. Oglethorpe moves to 15-2 overall, stays perfect at 8-0 in the conference and extends its winning streak to 12 games. The Colonels finish the regular season Sunday at Birmingham Southern (8-6, 4-3 SCAC) at 3 p.m.
