Colonels Drop Heartbreaker to Cajuns, 2-1
LAFAYETTE, La. – For nearly 50 minutes, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team clung to a 1-0 lead over the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns Monday afternoon in Lafayette, but two second half goals by ULL in the 67th and 86th minute propelled ULL to a 2-1 win over the Colonels.
Nicholls (1-4) struck first as Annie Newell scored her second goal of the season on a cross from a pass from Jess Coates to give the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute of play. Although the Colonels were able to hold off the Cajuns until the second half, ULL (3-2) fired off 16 shots by the end of the game, with nine shots on goal.
Starting goalie Amanda Boylson (0-4) had a career high seven saves for Nicholls, while ULL's Amanda Moorefield (3-2) had three saves giving up Newell's goal.
Having outshot the Cajuns 5-4 in the first half, ULL began a more forceful attack on the Nicholls defense in the second, to the tune of 12 shots in the second to Nicholls' three.
Maci Andrus fired a shot from 14 yards out that went off of the crossbar and into the net to tie the game 1-1 for the Cajuns.
It looked as if the two teams would need an overtime session to decide a winner, but a left-footed shot by Hayden Gibson from 18 yards out and just four minutes away from the end of regulation would clinch the win for ULL, as the Colonels would be unable to mount an attack.
Spencer Valdespino tallied three shots on the afternoon to lead Nicholls, with two shots on goal, while five other players had at least one shot on the day. ULL's Elizabeth Manuel had five total shots and three shots on goal for the Cajuns.
The Colonels will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on the Southern Jaguars in Baton Rouge at 7 p.m. in a makeup of last Friday's postponed match.
