Colonels Earn 1-1 Tie Against South Alabama
THIBODAUX, La. – In a tightly contest match that saw 35 fouls, seven yellow cards and two red cards, the Nicholls State University women's soccer team took an early lead that it was unable to hold on to resulting in a 1-1 tie against South Alabama Sunday afternoon in Thibodaux.
Nicholls (1-0-1), looking for its first win over South Alabama (1-0-1) in team history, got set the tone quickly as freshman Hannah Savoie scored her second goal of the season five minutes into the contest, but the Jaguars countered with a goal of their own late as two overtimes would not produce a game-winner.
Hoping to capitalize on their big win on Friday afternoon, Nicholls stayed on the attack outshooting the Jaguars 14-10 on the day, but had more shots on goal with 10 to South Alabama's four. Spencer Valdespino led all players with six shots on Sunday, with four shots on goal. Savoie and Jess Coates finished with three each.
Amanda Boylson (1-0-1) allowed just that one goal late, earning three saves on the afternoon, while USA's Melissa Drish stopped nine shots in all 110 minutes of play.
Only five minutes into the match, Savoie broke through the middle of the South Alabama defense and got a pass from Shelby Smith just four yards away from the goal and fired it in giving the Colonels the lead early.
Nicholls could have put another goal on the board, earning a penalty kick just before the end of the first half, but a solid save kept Nicholls from scoring its second goal.
With less than ten minutes in the contest, a foul at the very top of the box by Nicholls gave South Alabama a free kick opportunity, which Jaguar Clarissa Hernandez used to fire a shot through the group to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team would have many opportunities in the overtime periods, although the Colonels did make it tough as all four shots they took were on goal, with three coming in the second overtime session.
Each team had 15 fouls by the end of regulation, as South Alabama's coach Graham Winkworth and player Nini Rabsatt-Smith were both ejected after getting red cards, while Nicholls earned four yellow cards.
Nicholls will return to the pitch next weekend, traveling to take on the ULM Warhawks next Friday in Monroe.
