Colonels stay unbeaten, down No. 2 Otterbein 1-0
Centre’s women’s soccer team continued its hot start Sunday, knocking off second-ranked Otterbein 1-0 in the Glenn Hyundai/Transylvania Showcase in Lexington, Ky.
The lone goal in the match came 23 minutes in when Morgan Collins (Utica, Mich.) took an assist from Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.), and put a shot into the lower left corner of the net. It was a team-leading fifth goal of the season for Collins and the second assist of the year for Mitchell.
Otterbein outshot Centre 7-4 for the match, including a 6-2 edge in the first half, but was unable to get anything past Colonels' goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.), who made three saves in her fourth consecutive shutout win. Otterbein's Melissa Zang had one save.
With the victory, Centre stays perfect on the year at 5-0, having outscored its opponents 19-1. Otterbein falls to 2-2 after suffering its second defeat in two days. Coming into the weekend Centre had been ranked No. 15 and Otterbein No. 2 nationally among Division III teams by the National Soccer coaches Association of America. In Saturday's action, Centre defeated Baldwin-Wallace 1-0 while Otterbein fell 1-0 to Transylvania.
Centre is back in action Saturday when it puts its perfect record on the line at Wooster.
