Colorado College Blanks Elmhurst, 1-0
The Colorado College defense came up big again.
The Tigers allowed just five total shots, only one of which was on goal, en route to a 1-0 victory over Elmhurst College on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.
The shutout was the sixth of the season for CC, as well as its fourth at home. The Tigers improved to 5-0 on their home field where they have now outscored their opponents 14-3.
“It was a physically taxing game that was exactly what we needed at this point in the season,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “It tested our resolve and our ability to stay calm in pressure situations.
“Elmhurst is a very good team as their victory at No. 14 St. Olaf would indicate. Shutting them out should give our defense even more confidence.”
Colorado College got the only goal it would need in the 11 minute when junior midfielder Sean Parham ran down a long cross from senior forward Matt Fechter on the right flank and put a high shot passed freshman goalkeeper Jordan Collier from 12 yards out inside the near post.
It proved to be Parham’s second game winner of the season as well as the third of his career. It also marked the sixth time this season Parham and Fechter have combined on a goal.
The Bluejays nearly got on the board 7:18 into the game, but a bending shot by sophomore forward Reggie Thedford from the left side of the box drilled the crossbar and ricocheted back toward midfield.
The Tigers finished with a 12-5 advantage in total shots and a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz made just one save en route to his fourth career shutout.
Collier finished with three saves.
Colorado College returns to SCAC play next Friday when it plays host to Austin College under the lights at Washburn Field.
