Columbia Thumps Penn, 3-0
PRINCETON, N.J. – In a match played at Princeton, the Columbia men’s soccer team topped Penn for the second time this season, 3-0.
With the win, the Lions improve to 12-3-1 in 2016 and are tied with Dartmouth for first place in the Ivy League at 4-1-1.
In the first half, Rhys Williams gathered a throw in on the left side, then sent a cross towards Arthur Bosua in the box. The forward was defended well and unable to gather the ball, which trickled through to Francisco Agrest, who was waiting on the left. The sophomore sent it back to the right upper 90 for his third goal of the year, giving Columbia a 1-0 lead at the 12:18 mark.
Although the Lions went into the half leading 1-0, the offensive aggression would not end in the second. Columbia fired eight shots within the first 17 minutes of the second, and was able to break through. When Agrest went into the box on another run in the 65th minute, he was tackled from behind, drawing a penalty kick for the Lions.
In his first penalty chance of the season, Columbia’s Zach Morant stepped up and knocked it through, making the score 2-0 with 25 minutes remaining.
The scoring would not be over, as Kynan Rocks found the ball on a run-out. After his shot was initially saved away by Penn’s Etan Mabourakh, Bosua cleaned up the rebound, tapping in his fifth goal of the season in the 82nd minute.
The 3-0 result was the most goals Columbia scored in a win since a 4-3 victory over Monmouth on Sept. 14. The victory also gave Columbia its most wins in the regular season since 1983, when the Lions went 15-0 in the regular season before becoming the NCAA runner-up.
Dylan Castanheira stopped a season-high seven shots in his sixth shutout of the season, improving to 8-1 in net.
Columbia now will look forward to Sunday, when the squad can clinch at least a share of an Ivy League title against Cornell at 1 p.m.
