Corley's Goal Helps Mount Tie Iona, 1-1
Emmitsburg, Md. (September 13, 2013) – Senior Jackie Corley netted her second goal of the season to help the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie in double overtime against Iona at Waldron Family Stadium on Friday night. The draw moves the Mount to 1-5-1 and the Gaels to 1-4-2.
Ragan Cote sent a pass through the Iona defense to Corley, who ripped a shot over the head of Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera to give the Mount a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. For Corley it is her second goal in the last three games and the ninth of her career.
Just over two minutes later, Iona struck back with a goal of its own to level the contest at 1-1. Midfielder Safi Ayinde broke down the right side of the field and found Nicole Paulucci alone in front of the net. Paulucci collected the cross and beat Mount goalkeeper Rachel Bourne to the bottom left-hand side of the goal.
Iona managed one more shot in the first half, which was saved by Bourne, as the Mount took a 4-3 edge in shots into halftime.
The Mount tested Rivera early in the second half with shots from Cote and Alicia Mirando that were on target. Action went back and forth with the Mount taking seven shots in the second half to Iona's six.
Vicky Cocozza, who played the second half and both overtimes between the pipes for the home side, was called upon to make three saves, including two in the second half. In a last-ditch effort to give her squad the win in regulation, Julia DiGiacomo fired a shot in the final 20 seconds of the second half that sailed just high and wide of the mark.
In the first overtime session, DiGiacomo and Keriann McGettigan took shots but the Iona defense stood up to the test to force a second 10-minute golden goal situation.
Cocozza made her final save of the match in the 107th minute on a shot by Christina Tesoriero to keep the game a 1-1 tie.
Cote took a game-high four shots for the Mount, which outshot the Gaels by a 14-12 margin on the night.
The Mount will host two games next weekend at Waldron Family Stadium with matches against George Washington on Friday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. and another against Delaware State on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
