Cornell Named MW Defensive Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--- University of New Mexico junior Kelli Cornell was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week as announced yesterday by the conference office. The award is her first of the season and fifth of her career. It is the second MW award of the season for the Lobos.
Hailing from San Clemente, Calif., Cornell posted back-to-back road shutouts over Cal State Northridge (W, 1-0) and UC Santa Barbara (W, 1-0) on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively. Cornell protected the net for 180 minutes of action, making a combined four saves against the Matadors and Gauchos, and once again preventing a Lobo opponent from finding the back of the net.
With the two shutouts, Cornell became the UNM all-time career shutout leader, raising her career shutout tally to 27.Cornell is also tied for first on the New Mexico all-time career wins list for a goalkeeper with 28.
UNM hits the road once again as the team travels to Portland, Ore. for the Pilot Classic hosted by the University of Portland. The Lobos will face Oregon State on Friday at 1 p.m. and Washington at Noon on Sunday.
