Coutu's Early Goal Leads ODU Past Drexel, 1-0
NORFOLK, Va. - Ashlee Coutu scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute as Old Dominion University women’s soccer defeated Drexel 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
With the win, ODU improves to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-1 in CAA play while Drexel falls to 4-7-3 overall and 2-3-1 in conference action.
Drexel started the game off controlling possession, firing three shots in the first five minutes, but in the ninth minute, ODU broke through as Lisa Bernardini sent a cross from the right side into the box that Coutu one-touched into the right side for the early goal. The goal is the fifth of the season for Coutu and the sixth assist for Bernardini.
Drexel’s best opportunity came in just the second minute when Alex Vazquez sent in a corner kick that Andi Stampone headed off the cross bar and kicked out of the box by ODU.
ODU had several more chances but shots by Rachael Carroll and Hallie Rogers were stopped by Eve Badana and a shot by Bernardini went just wide right.
Drexel finished the match with just six shots, only getting off two in the second half, compared to ODU who had 13 shots.
Alyssa Findlay led DU with two shots while Carroll and Bernardini had three apiece for ODU.
Brianna Alvarado made one save in goal for the Lady Monarchs with Badana making six stops for Drexel.
Old Dominion hits the road for a four-game road trip starting on Friday as they head to Northeastern for a 6 p.m. kick.
