Cowgirl Soccer Falls to Weber State, 3-2
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 13, 2013) - The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team allowed two late goals during Friday afternoon’s match against Weber State and dropped a 3-2 decision that was moved to the Indoor Practice Facility due to weather. The final goal in the 87th minute by the Wildcats’ Mackenzie Harrison proved to be the game winner. With the loss, Wyoming dropped to 3-2-1, while Weber State moved to 3-1-2.
“Well it is a little disappointing, especially since staying focused, taking advantage of our opportunities and finishing is something we’ve been working on,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “If there is anything to take away from today, it was we played a great first half and have to find a way to keep that momentum going. Like any other game, we will recover and get back at it.”
Today’s match marked the third game in a row the Cowgirls scored all of their goals in the first half of play. The Cowgirls were once again able to get on the board first and early by sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay’s header that was assisted by junior forward Sara Paul. UW struck again in the 12th minute as senior forward Lucie McDowell found the back of the net for the Cowgirls. McDowell was assisted by junior defender Alison Clarke.
Wyoming was led by McDowell’s six shots, four of which were on goal. Ramsay recorded three shot attempts, as senior forward Olivia Mohtadi, freshmen defender Sammi Dunda and forward Laurel Ramer each had one shot apiece. The Cowgirls were limited to only five shots in the second period after having seven in the first 45 minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm, who has played every minute for the Cowgirls, recorded seven saves as the Wildcats keeper Ryann Waldman recorded five saves for the match.
Weber State took the advantage in total shots, 14-12 as Wyoming took five corner kicks compared to Weber State’s three. The Cowgirls limited the Wildcat’s to only five first period shots but Weber State seemed to pick up the pace in the second stanza and were able to record nine shots in the second half.
Just under the 20 minute mark of the first half, Weber State’s Mackenzie Harrison was awarded with her first goal of the game as Boehm mishandled the ball. It wasn’t until the 80th minute that Weber State was able to score again. Brecken Holbrook scored the game tying goal for the Wildcats in the 79th minute before Harrison recorded the game winner and her second of the match.
UW will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. matchup with New Mexico State.
