Cowgirls Outshoot Aggies, but Fall 1-0
Laramie, Wyo. (Sept. 15, 2013) - The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team outshot New Mexico State 14-6, including 9-5 in shots on goal, but the Aggies scored the lone goal of the game for a 1-0 victory over the Cowgirls on Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
Wyoming (3-2-1) was able to create a handful of chances and battled the Aggies throughout the 90-minute match, but a defensive opening proved to be the difference maker. In the 50th minute, NMSU (3-4-1) broke the scoreless drought on a goal by sophomore Mikaela Haley. Haley found the ball from a scramble off a free kick by senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez. The second half was a defensive battle with both teams fighting for possession and shots on goal.
Wyoming’s 14 shots were the most from the Cowgirls since their matches with Drake on Sept. 6. and against South Dakota on Aug. 30, where they also recorded 14 shots. The season high for the Cowgirls is 17 shots against Montana on Aug. 25. Senior forward Lucie McDowell and freshman Brooklyn Chambers led the Cowgirls with three apiece, two each that were on goal. Juniors Sara Paul and Kasey Curtis each recorded two shots for UW, with junior Sheree Smalll, sophomores Mollee Ramsay and Jennifer Paul and freshman Anne Hinman each contributing one shot. The Cowgirl defense allowed only three shots each half, five total on goal for the 90 minutes.
The Cowgirls’ offense opened the match with plenty of fire power, but unfortunately were never able to get the ball past the Aggies’ defense. UW’s quick pace and attacking style of offense managed seven first half shots, all of which were saved by New Mexico State’s keeper Jessica Schutter. The first half saw a lot of play in the boxes, as both defenses were able to prevent many scoring chances. The Cowgirls held the advantage, eight to two heading into halftime as junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm was solid with two saves in the first 45 minutes. Boehm would go on to tally four saves in the match to bring her season total to 29.
The Cowgirls will continue their homestand this Wednesday as Northern Colorado visits for at 4 p.m. matchup at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
