Cowgirls Strike Early, Down Wolf Pack, 2-0
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 2, 2016) – Wyoming soccer jumped out to its quickest start of the season on Sunday, netting two goals less than six minutes into the game. The Cowgirls held on to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack, 2-0
Freshman forward Michaela Stark logged a stand-out performance with one goal and one assist, the first of her career. Stark now leads Wyoming (5-6-1, 1-3-0 MW) in points with seven, and is tied with senior defender Katie Marcheso with a team-best three goals. The Broomfield, Colo. native assisted on UW’s first goal, sending a cross into the box that found the head of junior defender Alisha Bass. The header from Bass slotted into the far post just 64 seconds into the game, Wyoming’s quickest goal of the season.
Less than five minutes after the Cowgirls’ opening strike, senior midfielder Mandy Meyer placed a through-ball to Stark sprinting up the center of the field. Nevada (4-7-0, 1-3-0 MW) goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos came off her line to intercept the pass, but Stark beat her to it and put away UW’s second goal of the day.
“I think we’ve been coming out of the gate really strong, and it’s just nice to finally finish a couple chances,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “Getting two goals in the first six minutes set the tone for the game. I think the difference today was that our focus was there, and we were able to put away our opportunities.”
Bass once again made the start at center forward on Friday, after spending much of the season at the centerback position. Freshman midfielder Brooklynn Mooney made her third-career start, as did Stark who led the team in shots with three attempts. Junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree tallied her fourth shutout of the season with a complete 90 minutes of action, along with junior defender Claire Parker. Meyer is now tied with senior defender Sammi Dunda with a team-leading two assists.
