Coyt Fires OT Goal To Give Marist Win
PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - Senior Brian Coyt lifted the Marist men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 overtime win at Saint Joseph's to open the 2015 regular season Friday night.
Coyt had a header saved with 30 seconds left in regulation, but was able to convert a little more than two minutes later. After a missed penalty kick, Coyt corraled a pass from junior Zachary Reed that hit the upper right corner of the net with in 8:14 remaining in overtime.
Reed also scored the first goal for the Red Foxes off a corner kick feed to tie the contest at 1.
"This was a great team win," Marist head coach Matt Viggiano said. "We overcame some early jitters and had a lot of young guys playing, but we were much better in the second half."
Freshman Cameron Harr finished with a game-high five shots and fired his first career goal in the 61st minute to put the Red Foxes up 2-1. Coyt's score was the second game-winner of his career.
Shots were even at 14, but sophomore Mark Rajovic outdueld his counterpart in net, by making five saves.
For the Hawks, junior Coupar Lipp scored on one of his three shots and senior Emmanuel Temeh hit the back of the net from behind the box.
The Red Foxes host UNH at 5 p.m. Sunday to begin a season-long four-match home stand. The contest will be the nightcap of the only Marist soccer doubleheader of the year.
"I'm very proud of the group and we look forward to our fans coming out in droves Sunday to support us in our home opener," Viggiano said.
