Two late goals, including one in regulation to tie the game and one in the first overtime period, gave Creighton a 2-1 overtime win over the Tulsa men’s soccer team on Tuesday night in Omaha, Neb.  TU fell to 2-3-1 on the season, while CU moved to 4-3 overall.

 

“I thought we played well and did what we wanted to do in the first half,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.  “The guys were focused and did a good job of shutting them down and creating our own chances.  We took more pressure in the second half, but we defended well.  We just have to see it out.  We made some mistakes we have to learn from and make sure that when we are in this scenario again we do better.  Overall I’m really proud of the effort and the way we played the game.  It was another good game against a good team.  It’s disappointing to not leave here with a win, especially with the way it happened in the final seconds, but I’m pleased with the way the guys responded after giving up the tying goal and how they well they played in overtime.”

 

Gustavo Vargas, a sophomore defender from Bogota, Columbia, recorded his first career goal as he scored off a corner kick taken by Chase Bromstedt and then headed to the far post by Zack Stavrou.  Vargas’ goal was shot from two yards out with 40:52 off the clock in the first half and gave the Golden Hurricane the 1-0 advantage at the break.

 

With just 16-seconds remaining in regulation the Bluejays tied it up as Ricky Lopez-Espin redirected a shot taken by CU goalkeeper Michael Kluver who earned the assist.

 

Then with just 14-seconds left to play in the first overtime period, Luke Haakenson picked up a long ball from Lopez-Espin, went one-on-one with Marcel Da Silva and put one into the back of the net.

 

Creighton had a 24-14 lead in shots, including a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal, while Tulsa had a 9-8 lead in corner kicks. 

 

Miguel Velasquez had a team-best four shots, while Vargas and Harris Partain each added two attempts.  Da Silva logged all 99:46 between the posts and picked up 11 saves.

 

Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, September 24 against 19^th-ranked SMU.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium and will be broadcast live on the American Digital Network.
