Creighton Shuts Out Central Arkansas 3-0
OMAHA, Neb. - Three different players scored for the third-ranked Creighton men's soccer team as the Bluejays shutout Central Arkansas 3-0 in a Missouri Valley Conference match Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. Bruno Castro scored in the 12th minute and Tyler Polak and Jace Peters added second-half goals as the Bluejays cruised to the victory, outshooting the Bears 25-2 and tying a season-high with 12 shots on goal in their fourth straight shutout win.
Creighton now stands alone at the top of the MVC standings with a 4-1-0 record in conference play, improving to 15-2-0 on the season. The Bears dropped to 2-9-4 on the year and 1-2-2 in conference action. The Bluejays are a perfect 8-0-0 at home on the year, outscoring opponents 18-1 in Omaha this year.
Bruno Castro started the scoring in the 12th minute, when he took a feed from Tyler Polak after a great "dummy" move by Ethan Finlay over the ball. Castro allowed UCA goalkeeper Patxi Shortsleeve to come off of his line and chipped his shot over and around the keeper for his fourth goal of the year.
Shortsleeve needed to stop four other Bluejay shots in the first half and had the help of the left post on a Dion Acoff shot in the first 45 minutes as CU claimed a 1-0 lead at the break. CU outshot the Bears 12-2 in the opening stanza.
After UCA arrived late to the pitch to start the second half, the Bluejays were perhaps able to catch the Bears unprepared, scoring just 81 seconds after halftime. Jose Gomez collected a loose ball near midfield and slotted a pass to a streaking Polak down the left side. Polak continued his run with the ball into the box and ripped a shot to score his first goal of the season in the 47th minute.
The Bluejays again dominated possession in the second half, outshooting the Bears 13-0 after halftime, while playing nearly the entire half on the attack. Creighton added an insurance tally in the 84th minute, when Jose Ribas sent his in-swinging corner kick to the far post, where senior Jace Peters knocked in a header for his first goal as a Bluejay.
Brian Holt made one save in the match and the Bluejay defense was stifling once again, tying a school record by posting their 13th shutout of the year. The shutout was also Creighton's seventh in eight matches at home this year, tying a school record for home clean sheets set by the 2003 squad.
The Bluejays will wrap up regular-season play and play for their second straight and 11th overall regular-season MVC title when they host Evansville next Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
