Creighton vs. Saint Louis in Omaha
Homecoming for the Creighton Bluejays against Midwest rival and fellow Jesuit school, Saint Louis University, proved to be an exciting encounter at Morrison Stadium in Omaha Nebraska. Creighton came in highly rated but coming off a stretch where they had been struggling to score goals. Saint Louis, a school boasting 10 national championships, was a team on an upbeat.
From the start of the game Saint Louis came out showing more desire and will to win challenges. Creighton coach, Elmar Bolowich said his team came out “flat.” Saint Louis pressed and created opportunities. In the 39th minute Saint Louis Sophomore, Raymond Lee, opened the scoring with a low hit ball at the edge of the box that the Creighton goalkeeper, Alex Bolowich, was unable to smother. Once again, the Jays had conceded the first goal. At the end of 45 minutes, Saint Louis led Creighton by the score of 1-0.
In the second half, Saint Louis again came out and pressed the Creighton midfield and left flank. The Saint Louis Billikens presented numerous problems for the Jay’s midfield and defensive line. In the 49th minute the imposing Saint Louis forward, Robbie Kirsto shot from the right outside of the box and when Creighton goalkeeper Alex Bolowich failed to secure the save, Raymond Lee capitalized with his second goal of the evening giving Saint Louis a 2-0 lead. The Creighton goalkeeper’s lack of execution on the first two goals allowed Saint Louis a 2-0 advantage.
Creighton responded and gained control of the midfield. The Jays created several strong scoring opportunities and finally got one back in the 62nd minute when Timo Pitter beat the Saint Louis goalkeeper. Creighton pressed, but it wasn’t to be. Saint Louis striker Robbie Kristo scored his team’s third goal on a blistering shot in the 82nd minute to seal the win. Kristo got the ball on the outside of the left part of the 18 yard box. He shielded the ball and pulled it to his stronger right foot near the far left corner of the box, only to rip a shot to the far post upper corner. Kristo provided a fantastic goal in a big win for the visiting Billikens.
Final Score was Saint Louis 3, Creighton1.
