CSU Bakersfield Shuts Out Seattle U Men's Soccer
In their MPSF conference season opener, the Seattle University men's soccer team was outlasted by host CSU Bakersfield Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners managed to score three second half goals to hand SU a 3-0 shutout loss at Main Soccer Field on the CSUB campus.
The first half saw an evenly matched game, with both sides seeing opportunities to strike first. It was the Redhawks who held the offensive advantage, outshooting CSU Bakersfield, 7-5, including four shots on frame, but they were unable to find the back of the net early on.
Bakersfield did not waste time in the second half, breaking up the scoreless run in the 52nd minute. Gyasi Zardes dished a pass to Richard Menjivar, who shot in the game-winner from 20-yards out. Menjivar added a second goal six minutes later, off a cross from Evan Fassler, and Jesus Sanchez scored the Roadrunners final strike of the match in the 67th minute.
After going down by a three-goal deficit, the Redhawks struggled to get looks at the goal and the CSUB defense was able to deflect their offensive runs.
"We played well in the first half and had some good chances, but we let them score an early goal in the second half and from there it unraveled. Credit to Bakersfield, they are a very good team," said head coach Brad Agoos.
Seattle U (1-5-2 overall, 0-1 MPSF) will remain on the road in California for their next pair of matches. They will face San Jose State on Friday, Oct. 7, before traveling to Sacramento State on Sunday, Oct. 9.
