CSU Knocks Off San Jose State
SAN JOSE, Calif. - An early goal from Aaron Adkins and another from sophomore Jordan Hart led the Vikings past host San Jose State, 2-0, on Friday (Sept. 9) night.
Junior goalkeeper Brad Stuver made four saves to earn his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career.
With the win, the Vikings are now 2-1 while San Jose State falls to 1-1-1.
"I was pleased with the defense again tonight," head coach Ali Kazemaini said. "The more experienced guys like Brian Donnelly and Justin Mancine really did a nice job for us. Brad Stuver did a good job when we needed him, and its our defense that will carry us - especially early in the season."
Adkins' goal came in the 30th minute off a pass from junior transfer Cazz Warren. The assist from Warren, in his first year with CSU after spending the past two seasons at Division III Adrian College, marked the second consecutive game he has recorded a point.
"We really like what we are getting out of Cazz Warren through three games," Kazemaini said. "He showed an ability to get behind people at the Division III level and he has brought that with him. He's a kid who will mix it up and can get past people. That's what he did tonight when he assisted on the goal by Aaron Adkins."
With Cleveland State clinging to a narrow lead, Hart provided some breathing room in the 77th minute. The sophomore forward took a ball from classmate Aslinn Rodas at the doorstep and beat San Jose State goalkeeper Jonathan Lester to make it a 2-0 game.
Solid defense while holding a lead - something the Vikings proved they were capable of in their win over Bowling Green last Saturday (Sept. 3) - again carried them home down the stretch.
The Vikings will finish their weekend trip to the west coast with a match against Santa Clara on Sunday (Sept. 11) at 2:00 PST (5:00 p.m. in Cleveland).
