CSUB Defeats Hawai'i 3-1
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Sam Peña (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) scored a goal and had an assist to lead CSU Bakersfield (4-7-1) past Hawai'i (5-4-2) in women's soccer play Friday night.
Peña got the Roadrunners on the board first when she posted her third goal of the year at 12:31. Her header came off a pair of touch passes from Daisy Vazquez (R-Sr., Redwood City, Calif., Woodside HS) and Leilani Skinner (So., Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico (Sahuaro HS, Tucson, Ariz.)
Megan Todd (Fr., Norwich, England, Sprowston Community HS) scored her first goal of the season in the 71st minute when her long shot found the top left corner of the net. Peña and Tyler Shirk (Jr., Monrovia, Calif., Monrovia HS) earned the assists on the play.
Alex Gerrain putback a Christy Watanabe rebound with a little over 14 minutes to go to make a one goal game. Kiara Burkett (Fr., Santa Cruz, Calif., Santa Cruz HS) concluded the scoring with her first goal of the year with 4:16 remaining. Burkett trailed Emily Noethe's (So., Dallas, Ga., Spaulding HS) breakaway. When Noethe had the ball knocked away from her, Burkett was there to put the ball in the upper left portion of the net.
"I'm really pleased with the way our team organized defensively tonight," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "We knew the game was going to get wide open at times, but we were able to slow it down. I believe that is what led to our goals. I'm very pround of the overall peformance."
The Roadrunners head to Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
