Cyclones Use Late Surge To Best Immaculata
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Centenary College scored three times during the last 12 minutes as it claimed a 4-1 Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over Immaculata on Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) scored a pair of goals, including what proved to be the game winner in the 80th minute. Following a scoreless first half, Potter opened the scoring at the 55:55 mark when she dribbled down the left side and beat Mighty Macs' keeper Elizabeth McBride to the far right corner.
Potter added her second goal as she received a pass from sophomore Jaclyn LaGuardia (Wykoff, N.J./Ramapo) and lofted a long shot into the net. Just 24 seconds later, Rachel Gannon cut the Cyclones' lead in half with a penalty kick.
However, Centenary would rebound, scoring a pair of goals during the final three minutes to seal the victory. Sophomore Lorraine Dedrick (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) knocked in a crossing pass from LaGuardia and junior Samantha Sysak (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) headed in a crossing feed sent by senior Kelley Carvalho (Roselle, N.J./Roselle Catholic), capping the scoring.
The Cyclones held the ball in their offensive end of the field for much of the game and outshot Immaculata 23-3. Potter accumulated 11 shots on goal, while junior Megan Williams (Glenside, Pa./Abington) made one save.
Centenary travels to New York on Monday for a non-conference match against St. Joseph's College (LI) at 5:00 pm.
