DAYTON ADVANCES TO A-10 SEMIFINALS
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton downed Charlotte 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship Thursday night at Baujan Field. Dayton, the No. 3 seed, now plays No. 2 seed Richmond, Friday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Baujan Field in the semifinals. No. 4 seed UMass will play No.1 seed La Salle at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal game.
All four Flyer goals came in an 11-minute time span in the first half. The Flyers improve to 17-3 overall while the 49ers dropped to 7-10-4 overall. Dayton outshot Charlotte 22-13.
Freshman Kelsey Smigel scored two goals and junior Colleen Williams scored a goal and had two assists. Sophomore Juliana Libertin also scored a goal, while senior Emily Kenyon tallied an assist.
It took more than 30 minutes for the Flyers to get started but once they got going, the offense was dominant.
Smigel scored her first goal in the 32nd minute after a through ball from Kenyon. Libertin got in on the action next, scoring in the 35th minute. After a Williams header went off the crossbar, Libertin’s rebound went under the keeper.
Smigel scored her 13th goal of the season 55 seconds later on an assist from Williams. Not to be outdone, Williams scored her 13th goal of the season in the 43rd minute.
The Flyers defeated Charlotte 3-1 in their regular season finale less than a week ago on Oct. 30 at Baujan Field. Dayton , the two-time defending Atlantic 10 champions, suffered a 1-0 loss to Richmond on the road on Oct. 16.
