DAYTON ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND ON PK’S
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team hosted Oakland University Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and defeated the Grizzlies 4-3 on penalty kicks after the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
This is the first time the Flyers have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in school history.
KEY STATS
- Dayton scored a goal with 10 seconds left in the first half, pulling the Flyers within one.
- The Flyers outshot Oakland 9-6 in the first half and finished with 25 shots on the game compared to the Grizzlies’ nine shots.
- Junior goalkeeper Justin Saliba had two saves during the 120 minutes of action and a crucial save in the PK shootout to allow Dayton to pull ahead.
- Senior Alex Amankwaah converted the go-ahead penalty for the Flyers. All four Dayton PK takers converted their shots.
- Oakland’s tying attempt in the shootout hit the cross bar, clinching the win for UD.
- This the sixth overtime game for Dayton this season.

45th Minute – Freshman Kennedy Nwabia (2nd goal of season) headed home the corner kick from senior Anthony Keene to the far post with just 10 seconds left in the first half. (Dayton 1, Oakland 2)
72nd Minute – The initial shot by junior James Haupt was blocked in the box. The ball landed at senior Carlos Sendin’s (5th goal of season) feet where his shot found the lower left corner of the net. (Dayton 2, Oakland 2)
OAKLAND GOALS
8th Minute – Matt Rickard headed home the corner kick from Matt Dudley to put Oakland up 1-0. (Dayton 0, Oakland 1)
23rd Minute – Matt Dudley whipped the corner kick to the far post where Austin Ricci collected and fired home for the second goal of the contest. (Dayton 0, Oakland 2)
UP NEXT
The Flyers will now take on Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tourney.
