DAYTON DEFEATS UMASS, 4-1
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team defeated the Massachusetts Minutemen 4-1 in Atlantic 10 action at Baujan Field on Saturday night.
With the win, Dayton improves to 9-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the A-10, taking over the top spot in the standings. UMass falls to 4-11-1 and 3-2-1 in A-10 play.
KEY STATS
- Senior Maik Schoonderwoerd scored a hat trick in the first half. It was the second straight game a Flyer recorded a hat trick (Amankona vs. La Salle – Oct. 17)
- Dayton outshot UMass 15-7 in the first half and finished the game with 20 total shots.
- The Flyers had four shots on goal compared to three from the away team in the first half. Dayton put three more on target in the second 45 minutes.
- Dayton allowed its first goal at home (66th minute) in over 358 minutes, dating back to Sept. 12.
- With 36 goals on the year, the Flyers now lead the nation in scoring.

2nd Minute: Senior Michael Frasca’s free kick found Schoonderwoerd (5th goal of season) in the box, where he was able to head the ball into the back of the net. (Dayton 1, UMass 0)
13th Minute: Schoonderwoerd (6th goal of season) scored his second header of the game on a cross by Amass Amankona. (Dayton 2, UMass 0)
29th Minute: Schoonderwoerd (7th goal of season) completed his hat trick with another assist by Frasca. Frasca dribbled into the box and found Schoonderwoerd in the middle, where his shot went to the left of the UMass goalkeeper. (Dayton 3, UMass 0)
74th Minute: Junior Anthony Keene’s shot went to the left corner of the net on a pass by junior James Haupt. (Dayton 4, UMass 1)
UMASS GOALS
66th Minute: Ty Goncalves scored UMass’ lone goal with a screamer from 25 yards out that found the left upper corner of the net. (Dayton 3, UMass 1)
UP NEXT
The Flyers host Saint Joseph’s Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field. It is a make-up of the game that was originally scheduled for Oct. 10.
