DAYTON DRAWS WITH FORDHAM SUNDAY, 1-1
DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team played its second Atlantic 10 game of the season against Fordham on Sunday and drew once again as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Flyers pulled ahead in the 27th minute when senior Abe Keller controlled the rebound from his attempted corner kick. Keller then crossed a ball into the box at the six-yard line where junior Amass Amankona was ready and waiting. Amankona fired home a header to the top of the goal, just past the reach of the goalkeeper.
From that point on for the rest of the first half, it was a constant assault on Fordham's goal by Dayton's offense. The Rams held strong for the most part, but the Flyers controlled the tempo and kept the ball in the Fordham half the majority of the first period of play.
The score remained in UD's favor 1-0 at the half. The Flyers recorded 13 total shots, six of which were on goal while the Rams had just five shots, one on goal.
After a tough draw against George Washington on Friday, Dayton was playing aggressive and inspired on Sunday. The momentum was in their favor as the came out of the locker room for the second half.
In the 59th minute of the contest, a defensive error by the Flyers allowed Fordham to tie the game up at 1-1 thanks to an own goal by Dayton.
That goal sparked another run by Dayton that saw a bevy of shots on goal by the host Flyers. Fordham did a good job however of keeping them out of the back of the net.
Down the stretch, the Flyers were unable to take advantage of their opportunities and for the third straight game, Dayton was heading to overtime.
The first overtime period was uneventful as both teams jockeyed for position. Neither team was able to pick up the deciding goal so a second overtime was the result.
In the end, Dayton could not get the deciding goal as the Flyers tied for the second straight game, That also moved UD to 0-0-2 in A-10 play.
Amankona provide the lone goal for the Flyers, his fourth of the year. Keller recorded his team-leading eighth assist on the campaign. Dayton had 36 shots in the contest, 13 of which were on goal. Fordham had 15 shots, only four of which were on target.
There were five yellow cards, four by Fordham and one by Dayton.
The Flyers (10-0-2) will head out on the road for the first time in a month when they travel to Saint Louis on Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Billikens.
