DAYTON POWERS PAST DUQUESNE ON SENIOR NIGHT
DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team battled Duquesne on Senior Night Friday and picked up a 1-0 win over the visiting Dukes. It was the first win of the Atlantic 10 season for the Flyers.
The Flyers honored the eight senior men's soccer players prior to kick-off on a chilly night at Baujan Field. Each senior saw action on Friday night as well.
The game started with both defenses controlling the pace early on. Neither team was able to get quality shots on goal as the back lines held strong. Duquesne would press the tempo and attack the Dayton goal only to have the Flyers clear the ball and counter with their own run.
Play started to get physical towards the end of the first half and fouls became more apparent than shots on goal by either team, including a pair of yellow cards.
After 45 minutes of play, the score remained 0-0 as the teams headed into the locker rooms to re-group at halftime. In the first half, the visiting Dukes out-shot the Flyers 7-4, but only had one attempt on goal compared to Dayton's two. UD's main advantage was having five corner kicks at the break, but it was unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
The game remained scoreless throughout the beginning of the second half as the tempo was similar to the first half.
It wasn't until the 74th minute that either team was able to strike. Dayton picked up a corner kick, their ninth of the game, and sent the majority of its team into the box. Senior Abe Keller drove a curling cross into the six-yard box where junior Greg Enstone rushed to head the ball into the back of the net near the front post, giving the Flyers the first lead of the contest.
Dayton would hold on to the narrow margin to get back into the win column with a 1-0 win over Duquesne.
Enstone scored his fifth goal of the season while Keller picked up his A-10 leading eight assist.
Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer chipped in four saves and had his seventh shutout of the year.
