DAYTON SHUTS OUT PROVIDENCE 3-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Dayton women’s soccer team bounced back in its second game of the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over Providence College (1-1) Sunday at Chapey Field.
After suffering its first shutout in more than 21 months, a1-0 setback to Boston University Friday, the Flyers came out firing. The last time the Flyers were shut out was a 2-0 loss to Louisville in the 2011 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 12, 2011. It marked the first regular season shutout against the Flyers since Oct. 16, 2011, a 1-0 loss at Richmond. Dayton, who led the nation in scoring last season, was not shut out in all of 2012. Prior to the BU game, the Flyers had only been shut out twice in three years.
Dayton (1-1) had nine shots in the first half, while its defense held the Friars to no shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
Sophomore Ashley Campbell scored the game-winning goal in the ninth minute on an assist from senior Juliana Libertin. Campbell returned the favor nine minutes later, assisting on a Libertin goal in the 18th minute.
Libertin moved into a tie for second for career assists at UD with 28. UD’s all-time record for career assists is 50, held by three-time All-American Colleen Williams (2009-2012).
Senior Steph Emery scored in the 89th minute to ice the victory for the Flyers.
UD freshman Elizabeth James had four saves in goal to earn her first collegiate shutout.
The Flyers’ home opener is Friday, Aug. 30 against Cincinnati at 7:30 p.m. at Baujan Field. It is a WHITE OUT and fans are encouraged to wear white. There will also be white rally towel and white bead necklace giveaways. Admission is free to all UD regular season matches at Baujan Field this year.
